2011 Tough and Sporty Android Smartphones [Xperia Active, Defy+, Galaxy Xcover]

Second quarter of 2011 was the time for Motorola, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson to announce and launch their brand new concept for tough and sporty smartphone. The tough smartphone concepts made for active adventurers and anybody with rough, outdoor, or urban activities. Flick it, kick it, throw it, wet it, even drag, and drop it, tough smartphone shall survive and goes wherever you go.

Based on the concept, tough smartphone shall be durable, sporty, but still fashionable. The physical strength advantage of these smartphones shall be supported by user friendly operating system. For these days, I believe that android will be the one that gives us the best and reliable operating system.

The muscle of these smartphones are proved by the IP67 standard certification. These smartphones are supposed to withstand water immersion in up to a meter for as long as half an hour. It's also dust-proof and shock-resistant, which is means it's all we need to go to somewhere that we can push our self to the limit.

For this concept, we could find three similar products from these vendors. Motorola had started the competition with Defy+ which is released on September, and then Samsung and Sony Ericsson followed their competitor with S5690 Galaxy Xcover and ST17a Xperia Active on October.

Based on the specs benchmark and its price tags, the Sony Ericsson ST17a Xperia Active seems to be the best choice from these tough smartphones. Its smallest dimension, 16M LED display, 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 5MP camera capability, 720p video quality, speaker xLoud enhancement feature, and also its price tags will be the most advantages for Sony Ericsson ST17a Xperia Active beside its IP67 standard certification. On the other side its battery could be the most disadvantage of it, the usage of 1200mAh Li-ion battery seems not big enough & oldies for it.

The second place could be taken by Motorola Defy+. Defy+'s overall specs are similar with Sony Ericsson ST17a Xperia ActiveIts large dimension make user easier to type on qwerty mode. Another advantage from Defy+ is its 1700mAh Li-po battery which will make this tough smartphone more durable. There are no major disadvantages on this smartphone  except the fact that ST17a Xperia Active and Defy+ doesn't have any secondary camera attached on it. Compared to ST17a Xperia Active, disadvantage from this smartphone is only its less multimedia facility and more expensive price.

Unfortunately, based on the specs and its price tags Samsung S5690 Galaxy Xcover could be the last choice between these tough smartphones. Its 800Mhz Marvell MG2 processor looks to slow for this phone. Its biggest dimension, 3.2MP camera, smallest internal memory, and its expensive price tag are disadvantages that we shall consider from this smartphone. Beside that this smartphone still have advantage to consider, its the only one tough smartphone which has secondary camera, it can make user easier to have video conference or video call using its wireless communication facility. (ep87)
